Relocating to Corte Madera

Corte Madera is home to many families, first-time homeowners and commuters who have come to town to enjoy the mild weather, tight-knit community and central location near San Rafael and San Francisco.

If you are looking to move to a town with comparatively modest home prices, great public education and a high quality of life without sacrificing convenience or resources, Corte Madera is the town for you. This small town of approximately 9,000 people offers residents many things to do, from hiking and biking in the great outdoors to dining on delicacies to shopping at the town’s high-end stores or farmers market.

Corte Madera is located on the San Francisco Peninsula, about 15 miles north of San Francisco over the Golden Gate Bridge. With views of the Bay and many Bay Area attractions within driving distance, this bedroom community is not only an easy commute to and from work, it is near everything you might need. With many parks and open space preserves, you can find plant life unique to this region, while enjoying the mild weather just outside San Francisco’s foggy grasp.

The town was named after a rancho of the same name. Meaning “chop wood” in Spanish, Rancho Corte Madera has an important role in turning the local redwood trees into lumber for San Francisco’s Presidio. The land at the base of Christmas tree hill was developed by a wealthy family, who later donated half of the land to the Corte Madera-Larkspur School District and sold off the rest of it for home sites, which many chose to use for their summer homes. After the earthquake hit San Francisco in 1906, many more moved to the region. Presently, the population stays around 9,000.

Corte Madera is accessible by the Highway 101, which connects the town to San Rafael, San Francisco and beyond. You can also reach the town from Mill Valley by Magnolia Avenue. If you’re coming from Oakland, take the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge and the Interstate 580 to the 101.

Northern California is known for its outdoor lifestyle, and Corte Madera provides many opportunities for enjoying the mild climate outdoors. Take advantage of the town’s mostly sunny days by grabbing your bike and hitting the bike paths. There are both road and dirt trails for you to pedal down. Hiking and horseback riding are also options in the open space preserves, such as Ring Mountain.

Another popular aspect of Corte Madera is its farmers market. Held every Wednesday afternoon all year long, this farmers market draws many residents and visitors to Town Center to find the freshest local ingredients around. Whether you stroll through the stores and market, sip a latte at a café or find everything you need for a fresh meal, the farmers market is a taste of local culture you’re sure to love.

The town’s shopping districts are another huge attraction when relocating to Corte Madera. Providing high-end shopping, these fashionable stores and boutiques are what help make Corte Madera a convenient and luxurious experience.
